Its central component is comprised of a lightweight linear accelerator which is connected to the robotic arm of the system. The CyberKnife’s mobility allows the system to treat lesions and tumors from different angles without interventions or interruptions.

In many cases, even if the patient’s movements have been restricted, the tumor continues to move during the treatment procedure. CyberKnife uses an innovative technology called Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System which tracks the patient’s breathing cycle in real time. This technology allows the CyberKnife system to track the tumor movements throughout the treatment procedure and target the tumor anywhere in the body with extreme accuracy, preventing damage to happen in the surrounding healthy tissues. With this procedure, patients now have the freedom to breath throughout the procedure.

The treatment starts with the patient going through a high-resolution CT scan. This allows the doctors to ascertain the specific details of the tumor like its shape, size, and location in the body. These facts are then transferred to the computer unit of the CyberKnife system and are used to create a treatment method for the patient. These facts are also used by the surgeons to determine the right amount of radiation dose to treat the tumor without destroying the healthy tissues surrounding it.

Depending on the size, location, and severity of the tumor, the entire treatment may take 30 to 90 minutes. In some cases, the treatment requires several sessions which may be spread to several days or weeks.
