Another academic year is upon us and I think this fall will be busier than ever because of
"you know what"………the H1N1 virus. I know when I returned to work the first week of August,
we hit the ground running and we haven't stopped. There has been a lot of discussion on the
ACHA listserv about college and university plans and protocols regarding the H1N1 virus and
I have followed all the emails diligently. When the CDC and ACHA provided us with the CDC
Guidance for Responses to Influenza for Institutions of Higher Education during the 2009-2010
Academic Year, I felt better. The guidelines and information offered is easy to follow and
provides good direction. I know many of us will have students with H1N1 on our campuses and
I expect we can all learn from each others experiences. I hope we get the chance for a sigh of
relief before seasonal flu begins but "who knows what will happen"!!
The OCHA board met in August at Ohio Wesleyan University and plan to meet in November at
Ashland University. Our goal is to provide Ohio colleges and universities with advocacy,
education, and communication to enhance its members' ability to advance the health of all
students and the campus community. Diane Smith is busy trying to secure a location for our
Annual Meeting in April 2010. We decided to utilize an Ohio campus this year to help with
the rising costs of hosting a conference. OCHA mini-grants applications will be mailed
soon…..one $500.00 mini-grant will be offered this year to be used for the 2010-2011 academic year.
We have two new faces on the board this year; Tim Eppich from Case Western Reserve and Barbara Dudley
from Ohio Dominican University, we welcome their new thoughts and ideas for the upcoming academic year.
I would like to see more new individuals step up and be on the board. I remember when I was asked to
become a member-at-large; my response was that I didn't think I had the time to be a board member.
Well, I started as a member-at-large for many years and now I am the President. There have been many
occasions when time has been an issue but the lessons I have learned, the peers I have met, and the networking
I have done have made it all worthwhile. I know when I look back on my career in college health, the time
I spent on the board and the friends I have made will be one of my most rewarding memories.
I am wishing all of you a good year. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or
concerns about OCHA or if you just need to talk. I am always ready to listen.
Sincerely,
Marsha Tilden
